This is the kickoff for the Paved with Promise suitcase exhibition, which will be installed in Montclair Public Library's lobby on July 1 by the Folklife Center of Northern New Jersey.
Enjoy the exciting live music of Pepe Santana, an Ecuadorian-born master musician based in New York City, with Grupo Inkhay, six musicians who play over two dozen musical instruments a variety of pan-pipes known as "sikus", "antaras" or "zampoñas". They also play end-nocthed vertical flutes called kenas, transverse flutes, whistles and ocarinas as well as an array of percussion instruments.
Santana emigrated to the United States 38 years ago after the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 commemorated in the Paved with Promise suitcase exhibition that will be installed in Montclair Public Library's lobby on July 1 by the Folklife Center of Northern New Jersey. The Andean pan-pipes Santana brought with him from Ecuador and lent to the Folklife Center are part of the display.
Santana has shared the musical traditions of the Andes, his lifelong passion, in venues such as the Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall, and Carnegie Hall, among many others. His emphasis on age-old sounds and rhythms has defined him as a true spokesman of traditional Andean music.
