Are you in love with the magic of pop-up sculptures that appear when you open a card or a book? Would you like to design and create your own pop-up holiday cards this year? This workshop is for you!
In this class you'll learn about the history of 3D paper sculpture and the basic mechanisms of paper engineering. Starting with a simple counterfold pop-up card, we will go on to build simple structures like V-folds, parallel folds, parallelograms and boxes, tents, spirals … and move on to discover how to make our pop-outs twist and turn, and even flip (using a pull tab).
Materials List:
• a short stack (12-15 sheets) of cover weight paper (sturdy but not too thick; nice sketch paper with some heft is also fine; different colors are nice, and can help differentiate the mechanisms as we learn them, but are not absolutely necessary)
• Glue/adhesive (glue sticks or artists’ tape can both work fine; for final projects, UHU all-purpose adhesive is recommended)
• pencil, eraser, and straightedge ruler
• Scissors or Excel knife
• Cutting mat
