Experience the artistry of Tatreez, a form of traditional Palestinian embroidery, renowned for its intricate designs featuring symbolic motifs such as birds, trees, and flowers.
Embark on a journey with Wafa Ayyad, a master embroiderer from the Folklife Center of Northern NJ, across three sessions. Delve into the foundational stitches of Tatreez as you immerse yourself in its cultural significance.
During the first session and under Wafa's guidance, embroider a captivating inset adorned with a diverse array of traditional images, each carrying profound meanings waiting to be discovered. We'll sew directly onto a rectangular inset that can be sewn onto a bag, the back of a denim jacket, framed and hung on a wall or laid on a wooden tray. The possibilities are endless.
2nd session: Learn the art of couching which is another popular form of Palestinian embroidery (used for making Malak Thobe).
3rd session: Learn how to do manajel which is another embroidery technique used to hand stitch fabric together instead of the regular stitching.
This class is co-sponsored by The Folklife Center of Northern NJ.
